Chicago City Hall Weddings

Chicago City Hall weddings are a great option for couples who want something simple, intimate, and meaningful without the pressure of a large event.

The process is straightforward, but the day can feel unpredictable. Ceremonies are first come, first served, and timing can vary depending on how busy it is. That’s where I come in. I help guide the flow, keep things relaxed, and make sure you get the photos that matter.

Before your wedding day

There are a couple of simple logistics to take care of ahead of time.

You’ll need to get your marriage license through Cook County at least one day before your ceremony. Once you have it, it’s good for 60 days. The license costs $60, and you’ll need a valid ID to obtain it.

On the day of your ceremony, there is also a $10 cash fee at City Hall, so remember to bring cash with you!

timing + what to expect

Ceremonies at Chicago City Hall are available:

  • Tuesday through Friday: walk-in, first come first served
  • Typically held between 9:30–11:30 AM and 2:00–3:15 PM
  • Saturday: by appointment only

If you’re hoping for a shorter wait, arriving earlier in the window can help. I always plan with flexibility so we can adapt to whatever the day looks like.

GUESTS + what to bring

You’re welcome to bring guests with you. Up to about 15 people can be in the room, though it does get a bit tight at that point. Witnesses aren’t required, so it’s really up to you how many people you want there.

Make sure you remember to bring your marriage license and $10 cash!

Arriving for Your Ceremony

If your ceremony is during the week, you will head to the lower level of City Hall. The easiest entrance is on Randolph Street. Once inside, there are signs for the Marriage Court, and you will take the escalators down.

After checking in, you might be called in right away, or there may be a short wait depending on how busy it is. There is a small waiting area, and they will call your name when it is your turn.

If your ceremony is on a Saturday, the process is a bit different and usually involves waiting in line upstairs first, then again downstairs before checking in. Saturdays tend to be busier, so it is good to plan for extra time.
